We take our birdlife pretty much for granted here in Australia. Check out these Galahs, despite how common they are and how we take them for granted, aren't they beautiful after all!

Felt Like Elmer Fudd Finding This Lyre

Postby HareTrigger » Thu Aug 27, 2009 10:08 pm

I hunted this fella for two whole days in the High Country a few weeks back. Unfortunately he would not erect his tail, but I will take what I can get...

Image

After years of short sightings as they darted across tree-fern lined tracks and long nights (awake >:( ) admiring thier "song": at last, a "wild" Lyre Bird, in the snow no less! :) Damn it was bloody COLD >:(

The Lyre Bird I photographed was only a youngin', a more mature bird would not have let me get nearly as close, telephoto lens or not! Magnificant birds, photographing a courting Superb Lyre Bird in the wild should go on my Bucket List....

We saw a pair of them at Washpool National Park having a wash in the creek and we were pretty excited to see them as well, hard things to get close to.

If you are ever driving through the forests behind Ulladulla/Batemans Bay you see heaps of them - they are crazy birds, whenever they get spooked they run uphill, and if you are on the uphill side of them they come straight at you:gun_bandana::eek:

Oh - yes, you did real well to get a picture, I have never seen one stand still for long enough

I posted this in the Photography Q&A thread: but here there is no Q&A, just a few weekend shots

A quiet day today, it was raining outside so I practiced some macros ahead of my Simpson trip later this month: For those that don't already know it, "red" is a PIA for digital cameras, so practice on this pink Camellia in difficult light was good sport...

...and played with my new copy of Photoshop on some shots I took last weekend:

Still got some learning to do methinks...but the new version of Photoshop is nice

Military Aviation Shots

I also like aviation photography

And an F111 hits the after-burners for a quick take off:

This is a USAF F15:

And finally, a USN Super FA18 trying pretty darn hard to make clouds:

The Painted Desert, SA

Postby HareTrigger » Mon Nov 02, 2009 10:26 pm

The painted Desert was a nice drive, one of the highlights of the trip in fact. This is a rough panaroma of the Painted Desert Pin-Up shot:

Image

Sorry about the size, it happens you post panaromas! In real life, the colours and scale of the Painted Desert work really well, it would take a better equipped, and more talented photographer than HT to do it justice.

A Crested Pidgeon emotes

Postby HareTrigger » Mon Nov 02, 2009 10:36 pm

This photograph of a Crested Pidgeon pretty much summed HT's visit to Dalhousie and the latter part of the Simpson. It was hot, damned hot and accompanied by a relentless wind and dust storms by day and clouds of mossies, the ferocity of which I had never encountered before in my life!

If birds emote, this guy says it all for those few days:

Image

Amazingly, this photo is actually one of favorite shots for the whole of the trip, a common, not very interesting bird sitting sitting a post and feeling sorry for itself :40:
