Turbo Shopping - which one?

Postby roberiquez » Mon Jul 25, 2011 2:20 pm

When my tax return comes through, which is quite soon hopefully :)

I plan on getting a turbo for my 1hz 80 series.
I understand from reading up on the forums that staying under 10psi is critical for longevity of these engines...

Current quoted price below...

company turbo fitted price inc exhaust?
ROTOMASTER/DENCO schwitzer 4100 yes
DTS mitsu TD05 4200 no
AXT Custom Garrett 3900 no
Turboglide (not fitted)Garrett 2990 yes
ARB / Safari Safari 3200 no

Which one should I go for, what else do i need to consider?
Motor has done 210K
Is a pyrometer necessay at low psi (less then 10 pounds)

Nah probably not, I reckon intercooler gains are mainly to be had in hot weather and/or at high boost, and here in melb at low boost it's prolly a waste...

ARB want an additional 3 grand for the intercooler (installed) :47:

Is it worth that much more?

How about a cheap nissan silvia air-to-air intercooler on top of the motor with cowling to a bonnet scoop? (that'd have to be a fair bit cheaper)

two mild steel bends at the exhaust shop $300, 2nd hand intercooler $150, fibreglass scoop $60

Crikey $3k? Tell them you don't want a gold plated one, just a standard one!

Normal Silvia one should do it to be honest. Shop around forums for second hand ones similar size. And get some bonnet vents.

Oh and two bends for $300? I'm in the wrong business.

Toyota ct26. ? As for an intercooler, Silvia top mount should be cheap and easy enough, as for the pipe bends? Too much mate!

She's booked in for the Safari Turbo on Monday.

Will do just that for now, might look into the intercooler down the track...

Here's to hoping the ol girls up for it
