Are my 33s doin damage??

Postby Cyscoop » Wed Jun 08, 2011 12:32 pm

Hi guys, I've got a set of 33x12.5 tyres on 15x8 cruiser rims slipped under the guards of my 92 hilux sr5. Magical upgrade over the pizza slicers I had on b4 howeva iv noticed that since fitting them wen I'm in 4wd (low n high) I'm gettin a knocking sound thru the front end, faster I drive faster the knock is. I'm assuming that my cvs are probs shot as the whole car is still carrying standard everything since the factory.
Is that noise the cvs and has the increased track width of the tyres caused this problem by putting more load on the cvs n bearings?
Cheers
James

there is a fair chance the 33s will scrap on the back of the wheel arch, guard and slowly start to scrub things apart

I've got nearly 3 inches clearance all round the rear end and can put it into full lock with out the front scraping so I'm not phased about the tyres rubbing. It's juz the extra load I may b puttin on the front end bearings n cvs that worries me a lil.

Under full lock is one thing but try it under full suspension compression or full upward travel of the wheel, then try your full lock

No worries mate. Noise you are concerned about is it on both sides or just one. Next time your have the room go full lock one way and then the other see which side is making the noise.

Sounds just like a noise I had in my Lux, but i was running 31s at the time. I thought it was my CVs, or something busted in my front diff. It turned out to be the double cardan joint in the front shaft was shagged.

Climb under and check all uni joints for excess play, or movement.
I might be wrong, thats happened before, but if Im right, then a front shaft is alot easier to change than CVs are.
