I have just found out I have a compression leak in my Nissan. Its a 2.8st. 129.000ks.
I got a quote for repairs $1500min.
Has anybody got a ruff idea if this is close to the mark??
Any help would be much appreciated. :D

sounds like possibly a head gasket, shouldnt cost $1500, but it could be a cracked head or shot piston rings, they could be costly to repair, are you losing water from the radiator or loosing power?

try and hit the problem on the head. Find out what the problem is first. I helped a mate do a dodgy rebuild on his ford and its still running today.
$1500 sounds like way to much!

Loosing a bit of coolant. about 200ml every 2 weeks, but under load at 110ks the temp goes through the roof.It comes back down if I back off to 100ks.
I travelled 400ks and it was fine on the flat but in the hills it went right up. The coolant has very small bubbles coming thruough it.

sounds like head gasket or cracked head, you could get it pressure tested, but that probobally wont tell you which one it is, only that there is a problem, its the type of thing that even the mechanic wont be able to tell you what the problem is until he removes the head and inspects for cracks, if its only a gasket, it should only cost you a few hours worth of labour, if the heads cracked it could get costly. you could whack in a can of bars leak or chemi weld and it may stop losing water and come good for a few weeks, but it would probobaly only be a temporary fix

Jima couple of egg whites work as well as chemi weld too, they will eventually clog the radiator too though, i remember years ago i had an old HZ holden with a similar problem, i used to just feed it 2 eggs every months and it was happy

I think holden motors were designed for that though I used to do that to my 308 I had a mate with a 186 had a massive leak in head gasket/radiater/water pump it used to use 10 litres per 300 kilometres we had it so hot one day that you could see the head warping and it stoped so to get the head to sit back down we got the garden hose and sprayed the motor then filled the radiater and away it would go I cant believe how tuff 186's were

If all it requires is a surface/pressure test & gasket set, $1500.00 is a bit steep. As stated in another reply, The mechanic cant really tell you a great deal untill the head is off & been tested. He'll then know if its cracked, leaking valves, condition of the bottom end ect...
For your $1500 your could expect a reco head, gasket set, hose set, thermostat, radiator flush, coolant & oils and the labour.

Try checking compression on each cylinder. If only one is low then it's leaking to a water gallery and producing the bubbles. incidentally, whenyou start in the morning you probably get a small amount of water out the exhaust.
If two cylinders next to each other are leaking then the gasket is blown between those cylinders.
In either case replacement of gasket is necessary.
Where gasket is leaking or crack is found the head will need repair ; which may only need surfacing(machining) but it may be cheeper to replace it.
If head removed might as well do valves etc.
Ask exactly what the quote does and doesn't cover but seems about right if a full overhaul including new valves, springs etc. are included in cost.
