Was in the mud playing today and the power steering could not keep up, is this normal for a 3.0lt hilux??

I could feal the steering was really hard then go easy and then very heavy again when i was going from full lock to full lock but still going straight ahead

Without seeing it or driving it I would say it needs the power steer fluid topped up, hilux are prone to leaking too so may need a seal kit thrown through it.

Fluid level is fine as i only done done a service last Friday and checkedall the levels.

Maybe it needs a flush out!!!

Power steering is still a direct mechanical connection - ie the wheels point wherever the steering wheel says they should, the power steering just reduces the effort you need ot put in.
I would suggest what what you were feeling was chronic understeer as a result of your momentum overwhelming the available traction - so it sounds like you were really having fun

If it was muddy and wet you may have had some minor belt slippage especially as the pump would have been working overtime to keep up pressure with all the fluid movement back and forth, I have felt this occasionally with mine but always recovers when things settle down again.

Yes it recovered straight away, as in once out of a right hand donut in to a left hand down was very heavy but i was still going right :P , then when it finillay went left i throw it back left (it was tacking a while to catch up) it was like turning the wheel with the engine turned off, till it went left again  ,

Then i put in to 4WD and i love 4wheel drifts
(all this was done on private property with the owners concent, and no trees were harmed)

Maybe the p/s fluid was getting too hot from the excitement? Twisty was having that problem till he fitted a p/s cooler 8)

it could also be air in the system. not sure about the toyota boxes but the nissan steering boxes have a bleed valve
