Dad wants to buy a nissan now...
The prado is once again back in the workshop... after 2500kms, the freshly rebuilt transfer case has all the slop back in it again and is leaking oil!
and the clutch slave cylinders gone too...
2000 prado RV 3.0TD...
150,000kms
1x alternator regulator- toasted on simpson desert trip
1x battery, dropped a cell on simpson desert trip
2x steering tie rods replaced due to wear
1x front diff fully rebuilt
1x transfer case rebuilt
1x slave cylinder crapped itself
and now we find out that the prado has the R151 gearbox which is meant to had bad lubrication in it! the guy whos working on the truck has repaired 16 79 series trucks with the same box due to failiure of one of the shafts cos they dont get lubed properly!
Anyone else heard of this problem?

Sounds like really bad luck...Toyotas are pretty reliable all things considered. My Prado has turned over 70,000km and is singley boring in reliabilty. Has yours had a particulary hard life or something?

How do you tell its a R151?

Not the cars fault - all car batteries die, it's what they do.

Rebuilt and leaking oil - I would be talking with the mechanic, that sounds like a stuff-up with the rebuild.

its ex forestry, but didnt have a hard life (know the bloke who has owned it since new and he hasnt treated it hard at all)
the front diff was apparently "fixed" by toyota once already, there was excessive backlash so they tightened the preload on the pinion to remove it.... caused the pinion to go out of sync with the crownwheel and destroyed both of em :(
the leak and backlash in the transfer case- its a chain drive transfer case so the chains probably a bit slack- are being covered by warranty... its just a bitch cos the workshops on the other side of the city! :(

Look on your compliance plate and you will see the TRANS. CODE. It will tell you.

I very much doubt it lemons are just that i have had a few and they always have "just one more problem" We have a ute at work that has had over 20 grand spent on it in the last year and it is already well on the way to exceeding that in the next year

Thats the same box as what the Bundy has in it and all TD ones. I have had no such problem with it and they have been in them since the late 1980s
