vw beetle

my missus has a 2002 vw beetle but it has a problem somewhere in the ecu. it comes up with a dash light that is "epc" not sure what it means or what it does all i know is when its on it locks the transmission out of putting it in a gear?

ring a vw dealer they should be able to tell you over the phone what the problem is
