Thinking seriously of fitting a Glind before the trip (now a mere two months hence \:D/ ).

Anybody have any comments about them, especially in relation to reliablity, not just the reliability of the shower, but if it reduces the reliabilty of the vehicle because it is fitted in the the cooling systems line.

they are usually patched into one of the heater hoses aren't they? i don't think they will create any dramas.

I don't have a Glind, but my uses the hot water from the cooling system as well. I have not seen any difference at all since I installed it. I watched it very carefully for any temp difference, but there was none.

I know of a couple with one of the actual glind ones, they have had no problems! But if your handy with the tools and soldering iron just make up a heat exchanger out of copper and plumb in a pump yourself. Me and about 15 mates all have them in their cars, all up I think it cost us 70 - 90 dollars ea.

Went in to enquire about getting a Glind fitted and was told the units were good, but that fitting it would take an entire day! wtf, Glind advertise most people self fit in a few hours, and a reputable company tells me one day for a mechanic!

I really don't want to carry additional gear in the cab or gas on the roof-rack, but Mrs HT really wants a hot shower during our upcoming big trip and I don't have the hand skills to fit the Glind myself  (I refuse to pay $650 dollars labour as well, I ain't cheap, but that sounds like a ripoff).

Started looking at these instead (reluctantly) http://www.aussiecampshower.com/

Any other ideas for mechanically brain dead tourer?

A guy I work with has a shower plumbed into his diesel 80 series - the great thing about it is that most of it is always there in his truck, not another collection bits and pieces that you have to find room to store.
The really neat bit though is that you use the heater controls to set the temperature of the shower

HT - They are pretty easy to install..........

It would take only a couple of hours, but they would want it for the whole day.....

My sentiment exactly, except I am limited by location - would have to take a day off to travel to Melbourne for a viable alternate supplier & fitter

I think this the end of the relationship with my usual workshop, I think they simply didn't want the job and priced it accordingly. I have spent many thousands there, they know me by name but this could well be the last time they see me in their shop...I do not like it when I am taken for granted

HT we use a 12v shower pump from the camping shop, heat the billy and add to about 3-4 l of water in a bucket, so long as the water is tepid it is fine to shower with. Get yourself wet, turn off water flow, lather yourself up, turn on water and rinse. You can get away with 3l for a quick shower. If we have a river to source water from then I just heat up a gal bucket full, about 9 l and luxuriate. Cost $25 for the 12 v shower unit and $7 for a gal bucket from supercrap. Also bought one of those throw up shower tents a while back, $90, and those snap together rubber mats for a floor, $20, pretty cheap all up and has served us well. The down side as someone mentioned above is finding a place to store but that isn't a great problem.

They were ok, normally (slightly) better than the ARB price lists. Must have spent close to ten grand there though, and when the warranty period was up then I was going to have my car serviced there as well.

I still have a front locker to fit, still want decent sliders/steps, a roof console and next year was looking to do a few mods like extractors, fitting a bigger long-range tank (I can get a tank that gives me an extra 70 litres), and my tyres will probably need to turn into muddies, probably as a second set. So there was a few thousand $ there...

 Mate, I was in the Army for 20 years, I can do the bird bath thing, with a damp hankerchief it's A. P. & C with a damp cloth, with special attention to removing the toe jam

Mrs HT however, would appreciate a "real" shower...she has come a long way, her idea of roughing it was a four star motel or caravan "resort" when we first met, now, 24 years later, she prefers bush camping in the remote locations I go to. She doesn't like caravan parks anymore and prefers it out bush with me, she is an O:) and the love of my life, a real shower for her out bush is not much to ask for, she has certainly accomodated my love of remote area travel 8)
